European Super League was NOT discussed by Premier League ‘top five’ – reports

first_imgIt is understood representatives from the Premier League’s top clubs were discussing pre-season tournament arrangements in London on Tuesday, and NOT potential plans for a European Super League breakaway.Reports have emerged that officials from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United held a meeting with American billionaire Stephen Ross – the owner of NFL team the Miami Dolphins.Photographs of United’s Ed Woodward, Liverpool’s Ian Ayre, Chelsea’s Bruce Buck, City’s Ferran Soriano and Arsenal’s Ivan Gazidis leaving a meeting at the Dorchester Hotel together prompted speculation that another attempt could be made to form a new continental competition. But Ross’ organisation is also behind the International Champions Cup series, which sees a number of English clubs take on other leading sides from across Europe in pre-season tournaments around the globe. And an Arsenal spokesman, while confirming a meeting took place, insisted a European Super League breakaway was not on the agenda.“We are strongly opposed to any breakaway,” he told Press Association Sport.“Not Arsenal, nor any clubs at the meeting, are seeking changes to the Premier League and European landscape and no conversations surrounding displacing the Premier League or starting a European Super League took place.“Discussions were primarily around the ICC and formats of European competitions that would complement the existing Premier League.”It is understood Tuesday’s meeting was with Ross’ company, Relevent Sports, rather than the American billionaire himself. Involvement in the forthcoming International Champions Cup was mentioned, while changes to the Champions League format were also discussed. However, any impetus for a breakaway European Super League is believed to come from mainland Europe due to the current strength of the Premier League.Stoke Chairman Peter Coates told talkSPORT on Wednesday that the top European league are envious of the Premier League’s financial clout because of the new TV deal.UEFA confirmed it has no concrete proposals on the table to change the format of its European competitions, but is constantly reviewing the situation.A lucrative new broadcasting deal is set to kick in from the start of the 2016/2017 Premier League season, which will dwarf the current financial rewards on offer for a successful European campaign. When contacted by Press Association Sport on Wednesday, UEFA confirmed they were aware of the latest reports, but had no specific comment to make on the claims.A spokesman said: “We are constantly reviewing the formats of our competitions in consultations with stakeholders and also with the ECA [European Club Association].“At the moment, there are no concrete proposals on the table. We have just gone into a new three-year cycle for Champions League and Europa League, so we cannot offer any further comment at this stage.”Liverpool attended the meeting after an invitation from a long-standing associate, whose tournament they played in two years ago and are likely to do so again this summer during their pre-season tour of the west coast of the United States. It is understood the Merseyside club remain strong supporters of the existing structure of European football. The Premier League said they had no comment to make when contacted on Wednesday. Absa in R400m housing project

first_img21 February 2006A public-private partnership between the government and banking group Absa has resulted in the launch of a R400-million housing development project at Olievenhoutbosch near Centurion in Gauteng.Olievenhoutbosch Extension 36, southwest of Centurion, will consist of 5 480 housing units, made up of 3 049 subsidised, 1 168 bonded, and 1 263 rental units build on 180 hectares of land.Part of the land will also be used for the development of 17 business sites, three schools, two clinics, 10 churches and a public open space.Speaking at the launch of the project in Pretoria on Monday, Absa group chief executive Steve Booysen said Olievenhoutbosch was the first in a series of projects Absa would be involved in, together with the government and other role players, to help address the housing backlog in the country.“We aim to provide 100 000 new stands for low-income and subsidised housing, with a goal of a minimum of one project per province by 2008,” Booysen said.Referring to Finance Minister Trevor Manuel’s announcement last week that in future there would be no transfer duty on properties with a value under R500 000, Booysen said: “This will bring the dream of owning a home much closer.”Also speaking at the launch, Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said the development was in line with the Financial Sector Charter commitment to the delivery of housing to low-income groups in the country, and was based on national housing guidelines governing sustainable integrated developments. At least 1.9-million people in South Africa are still living in shacks, the minister said.“But if we work together we can turn things around and meet our deadline of eradicating informal settlement by 2014.”Source: BuaNews Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Bafana Bafana show support for football friday

first_imgKimberley, Friday, 18th September 2009 – Bafana Bafana, South Africa’s national football team demonstrated support for Football Friday today, in the capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley at a visit to Tetlhanyo High School. The school was attended by Bafana Bafana striker, Richard Henyekane. With less than 40 Fridays before the FIFA 2010 World Cup™, the squad encouraged all South Africans to “play for Team South Africa” by participating in the Football Friday initiative. Since its 4th September launch, we are seeing South Africans wearing football kit every Friday, in anticipation of the event and in support of African teams who will compete in the tournament.Football Friday calls for South Africans to wear a football shirt every Friday up until, and even throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on the ultimate Football Friday, 11th June 2010.Bafana Bafana visited the Kimberley school in “Football Friday” style, ahead of their international friendly match against Madagascar on Saturday 19th September 2009. Players engaged with the school children at their assembly, as well as through class visits where autographs were signed and football mementos handed out. The school visit paid tribute to a community within which player talent was nurtured.“Walk it, talk it, wear it, share it!” says Paul Bannister, acting CEO of Brand South Africa, one of the organisations behind the initiative. “It’s all about soccer – and being part of the same team: Team South Africa.”Together with the International Marketing Council of South Africa, the initiative is being jointly driven by the country’s major 2010 partners, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup SA Organising Committee, Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), South African Tourism and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).“Wear one, tell your friends to wear one, tell your work colleagues to wear one, tell your kids to wear one. Kids, tell your parents to wear one,” said Bannister. “We call on “Team South Africa” to get interested, excited and talking about football.”The initiative also aims to mobilise South Africans to be the best hosts they can be, as we all pull together to deliver the best World Cup, both on and off the field. If the mood takes you, and you feel like you would like to go a step further, drive the nation building vibe by flying your South African flag, learning all the words of the national anthem, trying the diski dance and making some noise – Vuvuzela-style – in support of our African home teams.Bannister said that as events, audiences and media coverage goes, “it doesn’t come bigger than the football World Cup. Pulling it off is going to take a Team South Africa effort.” Brand South Africa aims to leverage the event to tell the world that we are a country, and continent that is alive with warmth, energy, resources, resourcefulness, resilience, ambition and ubuntu.“We are truly alive with possibility,” concluded Bannister. For further information on Football Friday, please contact:Margaret DingaloDirector: Stakeholder RelationsInternational Marketing Council of South AfricaTel: +27 11 483 0122last_img read more

In Conway’s blog post about the results, he admits that there’s no perfect way to find data about either measure. He and Myles settled on using the number of questions in StackOverflow as a measure of the community and the number of projects in Github as a measure of the number of projects.Notably, the ranks from the two measures were highly correlated. There were some strange outliers – Delphi had far more questions than projects, and Viml had far more projects than questions. And one commenter noted that JavaScript was probably overweighted because many projects in Github use JavaScript but aren’t really JavaScript projects. The data is interesting none-the-less. Conway speculates that StackOverflow questions may actually indicate opacity of a language and not community. 7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac…last_img read more

Now Yahoo Says Delicious Will Live On…Somewhere Else

first_imgYahoo! just posted a statement on the official blog of Delicious, the popular social bookmarking service it was reported yesterday to be in the process of closing down. The blog is hard to reach due to traffic, so we’ve posted the full text below. The gist of the statement: rather than closing Delicious (“sunsetting” was the phrase the company used yesterday, internally), the technology will be sent to live somewhere else. Where hasn’t been decided yet. Though the company hasn’t mentioned it, Google’s donation of Wave to the Apache Foundation earlier this month may be a source of inspiration. It may not, though, too; Yahoo says it is talking to other companies that are interested in Delicious. Yahoo just may be able to squeeze some money out of this wonderful technology it tried to suffocate with neglect, after all.Above: A leaked slide from the internal deck shown yesterday at Yahoo, listing a host of services Yahoo will sunset, merge or turn into features of other services. And when they say sunset, apparently they meant “sell.” Presumably the other services marked “sunset” are still a goner, but forgive me for reading too much into it!The following statement, which was issued almost 24 hours after first reports of Delicious being on the chopping block, doesn’t say a whole lot. It does say the service won’t be closed. That’s good.“We can only imagine how upsetting the news coverage over the past 24 hours has been to many of you,” the statement concludes. “Speaking for our team, we were very disappointed by the way that this appeared in the press.”How patronizing! Do they think people didn’t see the slide all these reports were based on?It wouldn’t have taken more than a few quick phone calls to “clear things up” but most likely, Yahoo didn’t really have a plan to clear things up about before seeing the backlash that unfolded. You know how fast Google, Facebook or Twitter calls us on the phone if we get something “wrong?”Whatever. Good news. Get this precious resource into the hands of someone who will love it, please.See also:R.I.P. Delicious: You Were So Beautiful to MeWhat’s Next for Delicious? Many of you have read the news stories about Delicious that began appearing yesterday. We’re genuinely sorry to have these stories appear with so little context for our loyal users. While we can’t answer each of your questions individually, we wanted to address what we can at this stage and we promise to keep you posted as future plans get finalized. Is Delicious being shut down? And should I be worried about my data?– No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive. What is Yahoo! going to do with Delicious?– We’re actively thinking about the future of Delicious and we believe there is a home outside the company that would make more sense for the service and our users. We’re in the process of exploring a variety of options and talking to companies right now. And we’ll share our plans with you as soon as we can. What if I want to get my bookmarks out of Delicious right away?– As noted above, there’s no reason to panic. We are maintaining Delicious and encourage you to keep using it. That said, we have export options if you so choose. Additionally, many services provide the ability to import Delicious links and tags.We can only imagine how upsetting the news coverage over the past 24 hours has been to many of you. Speaking for our team, we were very disappointed by the way that this appeared in the press. We’ll let you know more as things develop.
