‘This signing is so big… I wish I had John Terry in my time at Aston Villa’

first_imgTim Sherwood has hailed John Terry’s signing as a real statement of intent by Aston Villa and a major boost in their bid to win promotion. After ending his glittering Chelsea career, Terry turned down numerous offers from the Premier League to sign a one-year contract with the Championship side on Monday.Terry made just six league starts last season and will turn 37 later this year, but Sherwood insists the ex-England skipper is still good enough to play at the top level and is expecting him to have a huge impact at Villa Park. The former Villa boss, a co-host on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, said: “I think John Terry could still play in the Premier League, but he has chosen to go to arguably the biggest club in the Championship.“I think it is a great move for both John Terry and Aston Villa. They are certainly showing their intent with the signing of John Terry because they are not looking to the future – it is immediate success they want.“They want promotion this season and John Terry will help them out immensely in that regard.“This signing is so big. He will lift everyone. I wish in my time at Villa there was a John Terry coming to the end of his career at a big club like Chelsea because I would have snapped their hands off.”last_img
